Protect Your Home During Tropical Storms & Hurricanes
Impact windows and doors are one part of preparing a Sarasota or Manatee County home for tropical storms and hurricanes. A useful plan looks at the actual products, the openings they protect, installation details, and the rest of the building. Beane Street helps homeowners discuss window and door replacement in that broader context.
Impact rating and design pressure answer different questions
Impact resistance concerns the assembly’s performance under specified debris-impact testing. Design pressure addresses the pressure loads a product is rated to resist in its approved configuration. Both matter, but neither is a promise that an entire home will withstand every condition associated with a particular hurricane category. Ask to review the exact product approval and installation requirements.
Consider the complete set of openings
Inventory windows, sliding glass doors, entry doors, and other exterior openings when discussing protection. Replacing windows does not establish that doors or other openings are protected. Make a separate list of openings included in the replacement and those that will retain existing protection. For a phased project, discuss how each remaining opening will be addressed and keep the product information for completed work. A whole-house window replacement should not be interpreted as whole-home opening protection.
Installation and surrounding construction matter
The approved assembly must be appropriate for the opening and installed in accordance with the applicable requirements. Discuss attachment, the condition of the surrounding opening, and water-management details. Product selection is only one part of the replacement scope; repairs at the opening can also require planning.
What impact windows cannot promise
Impact-rated glass may be damaged in a storm, and impact resistance is not the same as an unbreakable window. Windows and doors are not flood barriers and do not eliminate storm-surge or flooding risk. No window upgrade replaces a broader household storm plan or instructions from local emergency officials.
Prepare before a storm is approaching
If replacement is on your list, begin with product selection and a written scope rather than relying on last-minute installation. Discuss operating and locking instructions and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance. Keep project records and product information available, and plan separately for any openings that are not being replaced.
Talk through your property’s needs
Tell us which windows and doors you want to replace and whether the project is part of a whole-home upgrade or a phased plan. We can review the proposed products and scope without making a blanket “hurricane-proof” claim. During a storm, follow current local emergency guidance regardless of the windows installed in your home.
